Homeowners and contractors come to us with two very different misconceptions, and both matter.
Homeowners often assume a post-construction clean is just a larger version of a regular deep clean — "my house is dirty, come clean it." It isn't. A construction site leaves behind contaminants suspended in the air, not just visible mess. If that air isn't filtered or scrubbed, people can end up breathing microscopic construction dust — including silica dust from cutting materials — for weeks, or in some cases months, after the work is finished, without ever realizing it. If you've invested a significant amount of money into a remodel, the last thing you want is to inhale construction dust because nobody took the time to clean the air first.
Contractors often treat post-construction cleaning as a small budget line item — something that should fit into a modest, fixed amount. In reality, it's frequently a much bigger job than expected, sometimes taking two or three days to do properly. Drywall dust gets into cabinets, under sinks, and into places nobody expects — and when areas like fireplaces aren't properly sealed during construction, dust migrates into places that require significant extra cleanup.
Step 1 — Every project begins with a walkthrough. We never accept a post-construction cleaning without first walking the property, because every construction project is different and no two estimates are identical. During the walkthrough we evaluate scope, dust and debris type, flooring materials, finishes, windows, overspray, caulk residue, adhesive removal, timeline, and equipment access.
Step 2 — Pre-clean air management. Whenever scheduling allows, we perform a pre-clean roughly 24–48 hours before the final cleaning, deploying HEPA-filter air scrubbers (the HEPA 500) with brand-new filters — running multiple machines for larger projects, or moving them between locations. This scrubs the air of construction dust, silica dust, HVAC-distributed contamination, and other fine particles before detailed cleaning even begins. We may also run a shop vac during this stage to pull up heavier dust accumulation. The goal isn't perfection at this stage — it's reducing loose dust before the real work starts.
Step 3 — Top to bottom, left to right. Once detailed cleaning begins, we start at the highest point of the home: ceiling vents (the surface only, never inside HVAC ductwork), ceiling fans, chandeliers, decorative lighting, and hanging fixtures — using feather dusters and Swiffer dusters to capture dust rather than knocking it into the air, then hand-wiping reachable fixtures.
Step 4 — Structural surfaces. We work downward through door frames, window frames, sills, flat ledges, shelving, cabinet tops, trim, and baseboards — anything capable of collecting construction dust gets attention, always trying to capture dust rather than redistribute it.
Step 5 — Cabinets and interior surfaces. Every cabinet interior and every drawer is cleaned, because fine drywall dust migrates inside newly installed cabinetry regardless of how sealed it looks.
Step 6 — Windows. Interior glass and window tracks are cleaned in detail, since construction dust frequently settles inside tracks during the building process.
Step 7 — Walls. Drywall sanding leaves an invisible layer of fine dust on walls. We wipe walls down using microfiber systems designed to remove that dust without damaging painted finishes.
Step 8 — Bathrooms, kitchens, and living areas, following the same room-by-room process used across every Cali Clean Team service.
Step 9 — Floors, done last. Tile and hard surfaces are first vacuumed with HEPA-filter vacuums, which reduce fine dust being released back into the air (only our shop vac, used for heavy pre-clean dust, isn't HEPA). Floors are then mopped with a neutral cleaning solution — we avoid heavy chemical residue because the goal is removing dust, not coating the floor with unnecessary product. Once the entire home is finished, we perform a second full mopping after allowing additional dust to settle.
Step 10 — Final detail work. Remaining construction residue — adhesive residue, caulk smears, protective stickers — is addressed with products like Goo Gone where appropriate, without damaging finished surfaces.
An important clarification: Cali Clean Team cleans vents — not HVAC ductwork. Surface vents are part of the service; interior duct cleaning requires a licensed HVAC specialist and falls outside our scope.
Fine drywall dust travels much farther than visible debris. It regularly turns up inside cabinets, inside drawers, under sinks, on closet shelving, inside light fixtures, in fireplace surrounds, and on decorative ledges. We've also seen situations where areas should have been isolated during construction but weren't — furniture left uncovered, fireplace openings left unsealed, adjacent living spaces left exposed — all of which significantly increases the cleaning required once construction is complete.
One of the most memorable projects we've completed was a large luxury home remodel in La Jolla — at the time, the largest remodel we'd ever undertaken, and one of the dustiest. Although the renovation itself was beautifully executed, construction dust had migrated throughout the home, and some areas — including portions of a decorative fireplace — hadn't been adequately protected during construction, requiring careful hand cleaning to remove dust that had settled deep into the details.
One of the home's most distinctive features was a custom wood door that initially looked beyond saving. Rather than treating it like an ordinary door, we recognized it as a handcrafted architectural feature — it wasn't just a door, it was a piece of artwork. Using careful dust removal followed by a light application of orange oil to restore the finish and polish the metal hardware, we brought it back to life without damaging its craftsmanship. We were also responsible for the glass throughout the home and power washing all the flat exterior surfaces.
Although we'd been hired by the general contractor, the homeowners were impressed enough that they later contacted us directly for additional work, telling us: "We don't want anyone else in our home except Cali Clean Team." That moment confirmed something important: exceptional post-construction cleaning is about far more than removing dust — it's about earning a homeowner's confidence through professionalism, care, and attention to every detail. Most cleaners see surfaces. We see craftsmanship, and we treat every finished surface as if it were custom-made.
We haven't identified consistent patterns based solely on the type of renovation — whether it's a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, room addition, whole-home remodel, or new construction, our underlying approach stays the same. Every project creates its own unique combination of airborne dust, surface contamination, hidden debris, finish materials, and accessibility challenges, which is why we evaluate each property individually during the walkthrough rather than assuming every kitchen remodel needs the same process. No two construction projects are exactly alike, which is why no two post-construction cleaning plans are exactly alike.
When a homeowner or contractor hires us for a post-construction clean, they should expect the home to be move-in ready — every accessible surface carefully cleaned, detailed, and inspected using our systematic process, including cabinets, drawers, trim, fixtures, windows, and baseboards, with floors vacuumed using HEPA filtration and mopped multiple times.
We're also honest about what to expect afterward: a small amount of microscopic dust can still settle over the next few days after major renovations, since construction dust doesn't all come down at once. We prepare customers for that in advance rather than pretending it doesn't happen, and we're happy to come back for a re-mop once any remaining dust has settled.
